Soby’s

Samantha Fleming

In Bozeman, it is always good to know where the old standbys are. By saying standby, I am referring to those restaurants that have been around for ages that will never be “gourmet,” never re-invent their menu, and never modernize their décor or image. What they do offer is excellent comfort food, fantastic service, and the proud feeling of withstanding the test of time when so many restaurants are struggling or failing. Soby’s is one of my standbys. A place that I can go anytime, and know that the food I am about to consume is, and always will be, just the way I like it.

Soby’s serves a lot of food that can be utilized for many purposes. Let’s discuss breakfast. Any creation your hungry stomach could possibly crave in the a.m., they serve at Soby’s. Benedict, Denver Scramble, Chicken Fried Steak, French Toast, Pancakes, Biscuits and Gravy, Omelets, Breakfast Sandwiches, Cinnamon Rolls, Oatmeal, Eggs, Bacon, Hash Browns, and, my favorite, CREPES!! You think all of that sounds delicious? Well, that was only samples from the American breakfast menu. They have a full Mexican breakfast menu serving items such as Huevos Rancheros, Breakfast Burritos, Chorizo and Eggs, Chili Verde Omelets, and Tamale and Eggs. I love eating Mexican breakfasts. The combo of Roast Pork Verde, Eggs, hash browns, and salsa is my go to breakfast in this town. The breakfast portions are huge and delicious. It is a perfect location, as many know in this college town, to remedy any lingering hangover from the night before. I especially recommend the Mexican Breakfast for this ailment. Does the trick every time. It is also an excellent place to take children for breakfast as I have many times before. The bright colors and fun atmosphere make it a place that the whole family can sit down on a weekend morning and enjoy a meal together. Not necessarily the place to go for a romantic morning meal. The place has a lot of eclectic energy that is not conducive to a quiet environment.
Onto lunch and now dinner! Soby’s is now open Tues-Sun through the evening hours, and yet again with lunch and dinner you have your Mexican and America options at Soby’s. American lunch has every kind of sandwich you can think of. The old classic Ham and Cheese, BLT, Grilled Cheese, French Dip, Philly Cheese Steak, Grilled Chicken, Tuna etc. They offer all of these along with an array of Burgers, Salads, Soups, Milkshakes, Cookies; I think you get the point. Now, for the Mexican Lunch which I was lucky enough to enjoy on a recent sunny afternoon. For some reason, I always find it necessary to pair a Margarita with Mexican food regardless of the time of day. Don’t worry, I only have one. I feel like it brings out the flavor of the food (wink, wink). Soby’s is able to provide Beer and Margaritas to their patrons via the bar 317 located a few convenient steps away. It is nice to get the benefits of a bar while dining in a non bar atmosphere. The Mexican Menu offers the standards of Enchiladas, Quesadillas, and Soft Shell Tacos. What excites me about these entrees is the option of having them made with seafood. Rounding out the menu are Chili Rellenos, Tamales, Verde Burritos, Fajitas, Tostadas, Crab Cake Tacos and many more. I decided to have the daily special of the Taco Salad. I love the edible tortilla shell it was served in. Filled with beef, lettuce, and veggies, it was exactly what I was craving on this spring day.

Soby’s is and will continue to be a location loved by many in the Bozeman area. The warm welcome feeling it offers paired with delightful food is the perfect combination necessary for a successful restaurant. By offering a menu that always has something for everyone, they offer the opportunity for a delightful meal for even the most discerning customers, and all under $10. The next time you are craving a hometown, friendly atmosphere, head down to Soby’s and get your fix.
