Anna Callahan

Cover Artist for the April 2014 Issue

Anna Callahan was born and raised in Prescott, Arizona, which instilled a lasting love of western landscapes in her heart. Anna spent her childhood finding adventure outside, chasing silverfish and sunshine, and digging for gold. In her youth she began trying to capture her excitement and sense of wonder for the natural world through art. Twenty-odd years later, her passion for painting and nature has become a lifestyle; still today, “I try to let that childlike sense of wonder find expression in my art.”

Through the years Anna has lived in Arizona, Alaska, California, Colorado, and now Montana. She has rafted the Grand Canyon, scuba dived in Honduras, and biked Utah’s White Rim Trail. In all of these amazing places, she finds that the most beautiful perspectives of a landscape can be glimpsed in moments of adventure and solitude.

“Through the fluidity and brightness of gouache and the detail of pen I communicate my individual perceptions and memories of place. I take the infinite beauty of nature and the intricate elements of a landscape and combine the vibrant colors, shapes, lines and shadows of smallest elements with the distant lines of earth and sky.”

Putting the spirit and expression of a place on paper is Anna’s greatest artistic goal: to paint these secret glimpses of nature imprinted on her brain, in such a way as to make them recognizable, even familiar, to those many among us who also admire nature or find joy in an outdoor lifestyle.

“If you’ve ever found yourself in silence and awe in nature and felt that you’d glimpsed all the intricacies and joy of the world in a single moment, or if ever in the excitement of an outdoor adventure could swear you’ve seen more than there is to see: these are the moments I seek to share through my art.”
