Moms Like Me: Shattering the Myth of the Postpartum Experience

Please join us for an afternoon/evening of transforming stories, building bridges and a Q&A panel discussion! Hopes and Objectives: We are a group of engaged mothers and professionals who have come together to create an event to raise awareness, lessen shame and provide resources and information about the post partum experience. Across the nation, people are starting to break the silence. It is an important and timely wave and we are bringing it to the Gallatin Valley for parents and anyone interested in maternal health. The event will be multi-dimensional in the hope of reaching as many people as possible across differences and status. Many mothers and families feel alone. Our goal is to change that. There are many places where this discussion is alive: the hospital, birth center or support group. We want to create a large public event for anyone and everyone—to air the laundry, so to speak—so that those in the audience might look around and feel supported, “Yes, me too, I am not alone, we are not alone.” Storytelling: The event will open with three parents sharing their heartfelt stories. These authentic stories will be crafted ahead of time to 1) invite audience members to feel less alone as they consider their own stories, and 2) to model how we can heal through storytelling in community. To dismantle the myth that Post Partum Depression always looks like “depression,” the stories will cover depression, rage and anxiety. This will be the first of a continuing monthly gathering for parents to workshop and share their stories through the Roots Family Collaborative. Professional Panel: Then follows a Q&A panel with 5 (local) professionals who will answer both questions from audience and prepared questions on their experience working with individuals impacted by the post partum period. The professionals will represent the multi-faceted/holistic levels of healing (mind, body, spirit) and will include an MD, Midwife, Psychotherapist, Naturopath, etc. Resources: The goal is that members of the audience leave knowing where to turn when in need. We will have a pamphlet with local providers and resources. We will encourage people to talk with the storytellers or the panelists afterwards. This event will provide helpful resources for families new and old to navigate the post partum period with greater support and awareness. Community Partners: We are looking for community partners to be a part of this event in the following capacities - Sponsors - Financial Donors
