James Sewell Ballet

James Sewell Ballet re-imagines what a contemporary ballet company can look like: a chamber dance troupe that blends the elegance of classical ballet, the freedom of modern dance, and the can-do spirit of vaudeville. Technically flawless and unexpectedly creative, James Sewell Ballet remains Big Sky’s favorite dance company for a reason.

The company was founded in New York City by James Sewell and Sally Rousse and brought to Minnesota in 1993. Combining their expertise, vision and chutzpah they envisioned a close-knit company of dance artists willing to both challenge their physical limits and expand their notions about ballet. Three decades later, critically acclaimed JSB performances move and delight audiences across the country. The embodiment of the original vision is a professional company of dancers performing innovative work that explores the technical boundaries of ballet.

James Sewell Ballet continues to inspire the Big Sky Community year after year through their annual summer residencies at WMPAC, in which they strive to create new work that travels the country and returns to Big Sky on every WMPAC Winter Season. Their 7th Winter Season in Big Sky focuses on traditional groundings in classical ballet and opera with James’ typical modern twist to bring these forms together and into the 21st Century.
