Montana State University offers a new three-hour course called “How to Start a Business in Montana,” which helps participants think through some of the legal considerations of starting a business. The course covers which business entity to choose (such as corporation, LLC, partnership, sole proprietorship) in regard to factors such as tax implications and liability.

The course will also cover city licensing requirements for particular types of businesses and how to draft supporting documentation to register different business entities. The course does not address how to develop a business plan; however, participants will receive a list of low-cost and no-cost local resources available to assist new entrepreneurs with business planning and financing.

The class is $59 and takes place on Wednesday, Feb. 16, from 6:15-9:15 p.m. on the MSU campus. The Feb. 16 date was added after an earlier section of the class on Feb. 9 filled to capacity.

The instructor is Bozeman attorney Anna Felton, who specializes in employment, commercial litigation, and reputation defense primarily serving small to mid-sized businesses and professionals.

The course is offered by MSU Extended University and the Montana Women’s Business Center, which is funded in part through a Cooperative Agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration.
