Hawk Talk Runs Down Local Businesses
Gem Gallery:
Don Baide
Run down:
Jewelry has always been Don Baide’s passion, in high school he learned how to cut gems and went on to pursue a degree in metals at MSU. He started a business at home, and it quickly grew into what today is the Gem Gallery. Today, the Gem Gallery is known for their spectacular collection of one of a kind Yogo Sapphires. The Gem Gallery owns two Yogo claims, ensuring that the quality of their pieces are top-notch.
Advice:
“If you go into business for yourself, let it be your passion.” Work hard, be prepared and establish yourself. Keep your quality and you ethics high.
Powder Horn/Schnee’s Boots and Shoes:
Jon Edwards
Run Down:
Schnee’s was started in 1974 to create a “Rocky mountain version of L.L. Bean”, and the Powder Horn was started in 1946 as a sporting goods store. Both companies started in Bozeman to cater to the outdoor lifestyle the town embraces. In 2006/2007 the two companies became affiliated and continue to bring Bozeman the best in hunting, fishing, hiking and other outdoor equipment. Schnee’s is known for their boots, 100% handmade in Bozeman. Soon, the two stores will be combining in the Powder Horn location on Main.
Advice:
Jon Edwards gave us these three pieces of advice that helped the companies stay strong through the years.
1. Say your prayers and leave it all to God.
2. View your business as your purpose in serving the Lord.
3. Surround yourself with honest, hardworking, Christian people. Worry about the customers and provide value to them.
Béquet
Confections: Robin Bequet
Run Down:
After 25 years in a tech job and the economic downfall Robin Béquet was unemployed in Bozeman. At that point she decided to pursue her love of creating delicious confections. Now, Béquet Confections is sold in 700 stores and has received 7 national awards. In blind taste tests, 17 out 18 people chose Béquet Caramels over other high end caramel brands. The recipe shows that the caramels are the best. Instead of using cheaper oil, like most caramel makers, Béquet uses butter which increases the flavor, texture and quality of the product. The company is very grateful to Bozeman and Montana for helping in the success of the company.
Advice:
Robin said a big part of her learning was working for others, learn what you can from every employer and fellow employee, and learn from your mistakes.
Old Bozeman Beads:
Barbara
Summers
Run Down:
It all started as a hobby for Barbara Summers. She started buying beads and making jewelry and selling them at trade shows. Soon because her prices were so good, people were buying her jewelry to take apart and use the beads. In 1993 she opened shop in the Emerson. Her shop kept growing until she moved to the Main Street location two years later. Old Bozeman Beads prides themselves in having something for everyone and the best prices around. They have everything from freshwater pearls to rubber band guns, sterling silver to huckleberry products and local books.
Advice:
Start small, and try not to borrow money. Build on your company as your profit grows and don’t get too ahead of yourself.

The company has a “no cans policy” using only fresh, natural ingredients. They wanted to create a unique flavor that set them apart from other homemade salsa brands. For 2012 they are planning on unveiling a Picante ‘Hot Sauce to Hoot About’ and other great Mexican foods.
Advice:
Jenny Jane said, “Don’t cut corners, create something remarkable and that you truly believe in. Put your passion behind it, obsess about every detail and you will create something awesome. Oh, and laugh a lot!”
