“SEVEN from MISSOULA” an exhibit of contemporary art

The Emerson Center for the Arts & Culture presents an invitational two-venue art exhibit featuring artworks by well-known and emerging Missoula artists: Kathleen Herlihy-Paoli, Bev Beck Glueckert, Stephen Glueckert, Peter Keefer, Cathryn Mallory, Karen Rice and Edgar Smith.   “Seven from Missoula” will be on display in Emerson’s Jessie Wilber Gallery and Lobby from August 24 — November 16, 2012.   Meet the artists at their opening reception Friday, September 14. The evening begins with a free screening of “Drawing Machines” by participating artist Stephen Glueckert at 5pm, followed by a reception in the Wilber Gallery from 6-8 pm.

“SEVEN from Missoula” reflects current trends in contemporary art, ingenious use of materials and fresh ideas. These artists are committed to collaborative projects, creative dialogue, and art education in Montana. Several participants actively examine cultural history and how societal choices may impact our future. Many are working with issues of the West including land use, preservation of the natural environment, and aesthetics of natural forms. The show includes interactive sculptures, a copper wire installation, photorealist oil paintings, and collages incorporating acrylic transfer, photography, printmaking, and mixed media.

This thoughtful exhibit is a springboard for the Emerson’s “Schools in the Gallery” educational program. Students from Bozeman public schools and the university enjoy interactive docent-led tours led by Emerson’s arts educators. Originality of idea, thoughtful use of materials and appeal to our target audience determined our selections for the exhibit. For grades K-5 the tour is followed by an optional hands-on art activity relating to the exhibit. Tours are also available to community groups free of charge.
