Big Sky Resort Lone Peak Expedition: Tram to the Top
In the past, the views from Lone Peak had been reserved for only skiers, but last summer Big Sky Resort began the Lone Peak Expedition: Tram to the Top of the summit of Lone Mountain. The popularity of these tours prompted Big Sky Resort to purchase an additional expedition vehicle accommodating the demand of this unique activity. The tour delivers guests to one of the highest elevations anyone can access by tram in North America for an incredible perspective from this iconic peak.
Combining the Swift Current chairlift ride and safari style truck journey to the base of the Lone Peak Tram, guests travel via tram to the top of Lone Mountain at 11,166 feet experiencing 360- degree views of majestic mountain terrain spanning three states and two national parks.
The 2012 debut of the Lone Peak Expedition ran eight tours per day virtually selling out each trip. Due to the popularity of this new attraction, Big Sky Resort commissioned to have an additional expedition vehicle custom built and will run up to 17 tours a day.
“The Lone Peak Expedition isn’t the do-it-yourself, hop-on-a-gondola experience other mountains have,” said Christine Baker, Big Sky Resort Basecamp Program Manager. “Our terrain is more rugged and dramatic than other resort mountain landscapes, and Big Sky leads you through the whole experience, giving guests information and guidance along the way. It’s more of an expedition, a Rocky Mountain safari than anything else – especially when you catch a glimpse of a bear, an elk or a family of mountain goats along the way!”
Tours last between 2-2 1⁄2 hours with reservations recommended. A maximum of 10 people per tour and a guide greets the group at the top of Swift Current chairlift to take them on their journey to the top of Lone Mountain. Guests should be prepared for all weather conditions (bring layers), wear appropriate light hiking shoes (no sandals), and bring a camera. Binoculars are available for use at the top of the tram.
Big Sky Resort Lone Peak Expedition: Tram to the Top (weather permitting) and amenities will open June 8, 2013 for the summer season.
