Making Math Fun

Stacey Faldetta

Jeremy Rayzor of Rayzor Sharp Entertainment is an inventor. Being an inventor always has a certain air of mystery to it, but I won’t keep you in suspense on what he invents. Honored by Cambridge Who’s Who for Entrepreneurial Endeavors for “demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in educational game creation”, he is a young man with a mission to redefine fun in education. His business’ mission statement is “educating through the value of play” and in a world of violent video games and kids glued to electronics, he brings us back to a more innocent age by creating board and card games that use a fun approach to learning. Rayzor Sharp Entertainment wants to make learning fun for kids and adults alike, and with several games already available, they are doing just that.

Jeremy came up with the concept of his business back in 2004 when he was in high school. Always a fan of coming up with board and card games, one of the first games he invented was ‘Paper Football’. It was the same concept as the game with paper triangles that were kicked through a goal with our fingers that we are all familiar with, but his game had a different twist. “There was an additional math card game for the strategy part of football, and then still the ‘football’ kicking for dexterity.” Jeremy tells us. Jeremy then went on to attend college and study Applied Science, and put his game inventing dreams on hold. After college, his love of creating games could no longer be put aside; Jeremy took a leap of faith and quit his regular job. After that, while building his business and substitute teaching in Indiana, he noticed that his students seemed often perplexed and fed up with math and he frequently heard, “Why do we have to learn this?” He began to think of ways to keep students engaged and to have fun while learning arithmetic. The seeds of math learning games were planted, and in 2007, Jeremy moved his business across the country to join his brother who had been working at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital. They fell in love with the area and stayed. Rayzor Sharp Entertainment had a magnificent new home, Montana.

Jeremy lets us know that there are several games to choose from, as well as multiple skill levels within each game. Some of the games are strictly board and card games, while others, such as the new ‘Spiral Math’ learning program, combines with the internet to create a distance learning structured program. The levels start at basic, for all skill levels and progress, through advanced levels to continue to learn a higher skill set. The Spiral Math program also has a coaching program.

Jeremy says, “The coach is a mental arithmetic coach; there to help guide the student in learning, not to give them the answers. It is amazing to watch the children blossom under the guidance and support of these coaches. It is like a pat on the back for the kids every time they get one right, because they figured it out by themselves. The coach is there to encourage self learning. It is also a very convenient program for parents. We utilize Skype so the student can play the game from any computer with internet access. The idea is that the parents can be cooking dinner in the kitchen, and not have to drive anywhere for their child to receive math help. This is a great program for K-12 students, and even adults. One would purchase a kit and it is used throughout the program, which can be set up for what ever number of weeks they would like. We want the student to participate each day for 45 minutes for the chosen number of weeks as we find that taking days off loses momentum.”  There are discounts for buying more weeks for the Spiral Math program. Currently, Rayzor Sharp Entertainment is involved with the community and works with the Greater Gallatin United Way and Math Wiz programs. Says Jeremy, “These games are so important because parents and teachers see kids improve their math scores and witness an increase in desire to learn when they play them. It is all about having fun with math.”
