There is a photo of me taken when I was four years old with me holding my first camera. It was a colorful plastic toy, but a real camera, none the less. 

Emma Light’s interest in photography started early, but reached a higher level in her sophomore year in high school where she began to learn black and white film photography. “This old technique opened up new possibilities to me. I enjoy hunting for good photographs. I get excited as I click the shutter on a scene that I know will make a great photograph. That’s why I love photography and it made me realize that I want to pursue this as a profession.” During her time as a student at Montana State University getting a bachelor’s degree in photography, Emma is learning great techniques to ensure that these wonderful scenes she finds become wonderful photographs.

Of the cover photo chosen for the March issue of Bozeman Magazine Emma says “I’m very pleased with the photo I took of Saddle Ridge. I like the way the mountain is split between light and dark and also the mix of soft and crisp focus, courtesy of the wind driven snow. And I like the way the skiers working their way up the ridge only appear upon a closer look. I got this shot almost by accident while I was working on another project, which has to do with documenting some of the wonderful senior skiers at Bridger Bowl.” The series of skiing photographs are for Emma’s senior project, they are also an exploration to see whether or not she can be an outdoor lifestyle photographer. “I’m really starting to like this type of photography, in part because I get to do exciting activities while working. I enjoy being in the outdoors, and I think outdoor lifestyle photography will suit me best. Right now I’m building a portfolio that, hopefully, I can show to ski magazines or outdoors clothing companies.” She admits that throughout this process  there is definitely room for improvement. Since it’s the winter season, and Emma loves to ski, it’s is a good place to start working on her collection.
