November Cover Artist: K Potter

When K Potter was a little girl, her dad would patiently sit with her at the kitchen table and draw hundreds of flowers. Birthday presents were usually art related, and in the second grade, when they asked “What do you want to be when you grow up?” K knowingly replied “artist.”

Life has it’s way of taking many turns and looping back around on itself. Even though K strayed from art for many years, she never fully stopped creating. A catalyst came for her when she, to be fully honest here, got dumped. “I realized I wanted to be as happy by-myself as I was in that relationship, and I knew the only way to do that would be to relentlessly pursue art.”

K relays “I make art for many reasons. One, I love that I will never stop learning. With art, there is just simply a never-ending life of trying new things, perfecting skills, and always, always challenging oneself. But the main reason I make art is because it is my favorite form of communication. The messages in my art are not necessarily spelled out or literal, but they exist in a feeling.”

K Potter’s current focus is mainly on animals - horses and regional wildlife particularly. Mainly because she enjoys celebrating their presence on this planet with us (often silly) humans, but also because she is trying to represent them in a more personal manner than they’ve perhaps had before. “I want them to be worthy of our attention as much as the next subject, and to expand our “knowing” of them, both in spirit and physical attributes. My style is loose and fast, but is supported by years of technical and fundamental training (which I always keep up my practice on).” she states.

K hopes to keep making art that adds to the experience of the world. “If my art can bring joy or comfort to anyone, or offer a different perspective, than I am succeeding as an artist.” K Potter works from her studio in Livingston, Montana, as an independent artist showcasing and selling prints of her work through www.kpotterfineart.com
