Dance Dance Dance!
For over 15 years, an afternoon dance has been held at the American Legion Post in Manhattan, Montana every Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 or 5:00 P.M. (depending on weather and which band is playing). Live bands are always booked and, thankfully, we have never had to cancel a dance (771 to date)! Thirty-two fantastic band groups, each with their own unique style and genre, support our goal in preserving this western tradition and central venue, which serves four different counties.
Previously, Sunday dances had been held at the Borden’s Hotel in Whitehall. With its sale and closure, our dancers faced a serious loss of valued friendships and entertainment... losing touch was not an option! Mike and Judy Hammond, unsuccessfully searching the valley for a new, affordable venue, finally approached the American Legion Post 87 in Manhattan. After review, the Post Commander, Bar Manager and Executive Committee agreed (because Mike was a veteran) to a ‘trial’ use of the Post for our dance crowds. Afterwards, the Post graciously permitted our continued use of the facility for as long as agreeable to both parties.
Judy and Mike, upon accepting the responsibility of scheduling and booking bands, had agreed to head the program for a single year. Well, 771 dances later, here we are, still having more fun than we ever imagined. The wonderful pairing of Post 87 and the cooperative talents of our bands has been a true success story for our regional community and dance family. The friends, memories, enjoyable diversity of backgrounds and ages, and sacrifice and support for one another are truly a priceless reward. Additionally, we’ve had 14 couples unite, one engagement and one wedding on the dance floor, and one fantastic wedding reception. With dancers numbering, on average, from 50 to 80 each Sunday, we’ve become known as the most friendly and respectful dance family in the region.
Sunday Dance has a cover charge of $10.00 per person, ALL of which in given to each respective band. The American Legion’s return is through the bar exchange and elective gaming.
Having once attended, you’ll be part of our ‘dance family’ and resist ever missing one. Come on out and give it a try. You’ll be glad you did.
