Nothing warms a cold winter quite like bass. Knowing this likely played into Excisions plans to tour extensively this winter. The dubstep DJ from British Columbia kicks off a 50-date jaunt across the continent in January, running through mid-April.
"We want to really push all facets of the concert experience beyond expectations," says Jeff Abel (the man behind the hoodie-wearing DJ persona). "From beefing up our sound system to a ridiculous 150,000 watts, to upgrading our visual and lighting experience far beyond what anyone else in the industry is doing – we're really taking the audiovisual experience to new heights."
Part of the production is copied from his 2013 tour, a set-up known as The Executioner. Its lights and rigs are so large that they don't fit inside all venues, and often at times need to be modified. For fans who see the tour in smaller clubs, however, the experience is full-on audio-visual stimulation.
Along with his friend Datsik, Excision has carved out an identity for bass music in the Pacific Northwest – an area not traditionally known for dance music, let alone clubbing. Like Datsik, Excision's tour strategy is a thorough one, if blistering at time for the artist; hitting smaller markets, reaching fans that don't have easy access to festivals and often miss out on larger, more heavily sponsored tours. That said, two nights at New York City's Best Buy Theater are scheduled for March, between dates in Knoxville, TN and Buffalo, NY.
"We're going into the venues that not only have solid acoustics with great sight lines but also treat our fans right to help us turn the venue into a part of the overall experience," Abel explains. "We want to help create one of the best nights of your life."
The tour starts in Spokane, WA on January 22. Dirtyphonics and Ill Gates open. - Zel McCarthy
