The 1491s, a sketch comedy group self-described as, "a gaggle of Indians chock full of cynicism and splashed with a good dose of indigenous satire," will perform for the first time at Montana State University on Friday, November 6th at 6:30 pm. The 1491s have a prominent voice in popular culture and media, including appearances on the Daily Show segment about the use of the Redskins mascot, contributing commentary on the Occupy Wall Street movement, and with their latest "Represent" series which highlights the modern ways Native Americans represent their culture. Using digital media and comedy, the 1491s address stereotypes in hopes of changing the common narratives around Native Americans. The group has noted the lack of space for critical dialogue in Native communities, and they use comedy as a vehicle to address social issues like the commercialization of Native American culture. According to 1491s member Dallas Goldtooth, before the 1970s, Native people were not depicted as members of modern society by mainstream media, and are still mostly portrayed as "living between two worlds."
