Building a Cob Oven

Bake the best pizza in your backyard! Come learn how to build a beautiful, functional, and inexpensive outdoor oven from mostly recycled and natural materials. In this day-long workshop, we will be building a cob oven. Cob is a natural building material made out of sand, straw, clay and water. It is used not only for building ovens but benches and even houses. Because of its excellent thermal mass properties, cob ovens absorb and maintain the heat of a fire and can be used for a variety of purposes from making pizzas, to baking bread, to curing yogurt and drying herbs. This is a hands-on class so expect to get your hands (and feet!) dirty. You will learn the background and theory behind natural building and then help build a cob oven from start to finish. Although not required, you can also come back on Sunday afternoon to put the finishing touches on the oven. Bring a dish to share for a potluck lunch. Coffee, tea and snacks will be provided throughout the day. This is a great activity to do with kids so families are encouraged to attend. This workshop will be held at Broken Ground in Bozeman. Please register in advance. Directions and details will be emailed upon registration.
