Wonderlust: Music of the Earth - Balinese Gamelan

This program will provide a look into the music and instruments of the island of Bali to better understand how the music relates to life in the culture there. The presentation will include sound/visual recordings and live demonstrations, as well as pictures to provide visual insight to the Hindu-Buddhist background of the ancient, but still relevant Balinese arts. Assisting in the musical demonstrations are Jeffrey Vick (the current Director of Gamelan Sekar Gunung at Montana State University) and Karen Leech (a former Director of GSG). Alan Leech is a retired Professor from Montana State University School of Music, where he developed his popular ‘World Music’ course. His travels around the world have informed him on many topics, including cooking food from many cultures. Leech led a rewarding tour to Bali for students, faculty, and townsfolk in 1999, and founded the Bozeman Gamelan in 2000. He is a published composer, and an active performer in the Bozeman Symphony, as well as several local chamber music groups. Wonderlust programs at the Belgrade Community are free and open to the public thanks to sponsorship by First Interstate Bank.
