The Bozeman Doc Series and MSU’s Center for the Communication of Science will present a selection of the best short documentaries from this year’s Ethnografilm Paris Film Festival on Thursday, May 18th, at7pm at the Emerson.

Held every April at the historic Ciné 13 Theater in Montmartre, Ethnografilm celebrates the art and science of non-fiction filmmaking, serving as a showcase for work and a forum for dialog between independent and academic documentary filmmakers.Marked by its contemporary relevance and broad intellectual range, the objective of Ethnografilm is to promote the examination of cultures as well as social issues, describing “patterns of living” throughout the world to educate and entertain. 

The Best of Ethnografilm will include eight short documentaries, each illuminating a fascinating story in a program covering a wide range of cultures, locales and topics. Titles include Archives of Extinction, a poetic piece exploring the human role in disassembling past and reassembling future ecologies. Jerusalem Voices presents a fresh, intimate look at life in the holy land through the eyes of three young locals. A man released from death row when DNA tests show he had been wrongfully convicted is at the heart of People Like Us. A quirky portrait of a woman dedicated to keeping her remote town connected to the Internet, Network Keeper takes us to Haute-Gaspesie, Quebec. Dish Life takes a fun and creative approach to the topic of stem cells and how scientists care for them. A beautiful window into life and art in Senegal, Meissa follows a man on his daily ventures juggling between the identities of an artist and that of a bicycle mechanic. Present Moment is a moving profile of a man accepting Parkinson's disease, telling us his story with wisdom, honesty and courage. And finally, The Stainless Stealer Steals the Universe, by Bozeman based filmmaker Kathy Kasic, soars through Alexander Calder's mobile as the film explores space and music.Learn more about the lineup and see trailers for the films at www.bozemandocseries.org.

Recently wrapping up its third season, the Bozeman Doc Series presents the best new documentaries of the year at the Emerson Center every other Thursday between October and April. The Center for the Communication of Science at Montana State University, housed within the College of Arts and Architecture, is dedicated to innovative communication and creative expression of the fields of science, engineering, technology, and math through film, photography, art, music, and architecture.
