Mathematics and Humanity: Power, Struggle, and Access by Dr. Elizabeth Burroughs

The Honors College proudly presents a lecture by Dr. Elizabeth Burroughs, Department Head and Professor of Mathematics Education, entitled "Mathematics and Humanity: Power, Struggle, and Access."

Mathematics is a human endeavor – learning and knowing about mathematics provides practical skills, prepares individuals to exercise critical thinking and sound judgment, and can expose thinkers to Beauty and Joy. But, prevailing public attitudes about teaching, gender, and mathematics often constrain student development in mathematics and limit access to mathematical ideas. The education system and those of us in it bear a responsibility to ensure fair and equitable access to the knowledge, opportunity, and power that comes with the pursuit of mathematical ideas.

This presentation is part of the Honors Presents Lecture Series. This lecture is free and open to the public.
