Plenty of labels get tossed around trying to capture Motherhood's unbridled exuberance. "It’s painful when folks try to describe our music by genre," bassist Penny Stevens recently told Philthy Mag. “They’re like 'proggy country?' Or 'black metal fusion?' 'Thrash pop?'” But, like the state of being the band takes its name from, there are many disparate moods wrapped in the experience: nurturance, regeneration, pain, excitement, loving, all tangled together as the band freely splatters punk, prog, alternative, freak folk, art rock, etc into a honking, delightfully ramshackle tumble of sound. Fans of everyone from Deerhoof to the Mekons to Speedy Ortiz to the Cramps to Tera Melos and others across the musical spectrum will find a common cause rallying behind the band's new album Dear Bongo.
