Sustainable Destinations Workshop
Bridger Bowl is hosting a Sustainable Destinations workshop in Montana October 9 – 10, 2019. The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) Sustainable Tourism Training Program (STTP) offers practical insights and effective steps to help improve sustainability practices. The STTP strengthens awareness of sustainable tourism in destinations around the world.
Led by Dr. Kim Langmaid, GSTC trainer and Walking Mountains Science Center Founder & Vice President of Sustainability Programs, the training will delve into the nuances of fostering a sustainable community; touching on critical issues including renewable energy, air quality, wildlife corridors and public transportation. The event quickly filled with community and statewide stakeholders who will be in attendance.
GSTC’s Sustainable Tourism Training Program is valuable to many types of travel and tourism related businesses, organizations, and governments. Participants in the 2-day STTP will gain in depth understanding of the GSTC Criteria that applies to destinations, tourism management organizations, hotels, tour operators and hospitality-related businesses. Upon completion of the 2-day training, participants are eligible to earn a Certificate in Sustainable Tourism from the GSTC.
The GSTC Criteria are the result of a worldwide effort to develop a common language about sustainability in tourism and are arranged in four pillars: Sustainable Management, Socioeconomic Impacts, Cultural and Community Impacts, and Environmental Impacts.
The GSTC Criteria are used for education and awareness-raising, policy-making, measurement and evaluation. The Criteria takes into account numerous guidelines and standards for sustainable tourism from every continent. Since tourism destinations each have their own culture, environment, customs and laws, the Criteria are designed to be adapted to local conditions by additional criteria for the specific location and activity.
The GSTC Criteria have been used to develop the Actively Green sustainable business training and certification program for businesses, and the Mountain IDEAL sustainable destination standard for mountain resort communities.
Director of Sustainability, Bonnie Hickey, along with the newly formed Bridger Bowl Green Team, are extremely excited to bring this spectacular training opportunity to the community of Bozeman and the state of Montana.
