Film Screening "The Weight of Water" CANCELED
Winner of the Banff Film Festival Grand Prize, "The Weight of Water", featuring blind adventurer Erik Weihenmayer solo kayaking the length of the Grand Canyon, will be screened on Friday, April 3 at 6:30 p.m. in Norm Asbjornson Inspiration Hall at Montana State University. "The Weight of Water" is an adventure documentary that explores the life of Weihenmayer and his calling towards adventure as a blind man. In this film, Erik challenges preconceptions about adaptive athletes through an attempt to solo kayak Grand Canyon and pushes the limits of societal expectation and stereotype. As a result of retinoschisis, a rare eye condition, Weihenmayer lost his eyesight by the age of 14. He has spent the rest of his life creating a narrative of ‘no barriers,’ and works to help people with challenges embrace a pioneering spirit and develop lives of meaning and purpose. Weihenmayer’s story is one of perseverance, strength, and empathy and he has shared this story with former presidents, Google, Microsoft, and Bank of America. "The Weight of Water" has received recognition around the continent; as a 2018 Grand Prize winner at Banff Film Festival, DOCLANDS Audience Choice 2019, the Denver Film Festival’s 2018 People’s Choice Award for Best Documentary Feature, the 5 Point Adventure Film Festival’s Best of Festival 2019, and the winner of Best Feature Film of the 2019 Water Docs Ecologos Film Festival. This screening is hosted by the MSU Leadership Institute, and in partnership with the MSU Office of Disability Services, Outdoor Recreation Program, Office of Student Engagement, Diversity and Inclusion Student Commons, Associated Students of Montana State University, Office of the Provost, Murdoch's Home and Ranch Supply and First Interstate Bank.
