"The Montana Economy and Taxation”

Montana State University Wonderlust will host a free, online public lecture about the economy in Montana. “The Montana Economy and Taxation” will be led by Doug Young, professor emeritus at MSU, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 23.

Young will discuss changes in the Montana economy over the last 70 years, including the growing importance of capital income and transfer payments; the roles of agriculture and mining; which industries are the largest employers in Montana; and the impact of the emerging high-tech sector. He will also touch on taxation policy in Montana, including resort and local option taxes, and will compare Montana’s taxes with those in neighboring states and national averages.

Young was a professor of economics in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Economics at MSU from 1977 until 2010. Since retiring, he has held several positions with MSU Wonderlust, including instructor, treasurer, president and chair of the Advisory Council. Young is currently a member of the Montana Legislature’s Interim Revenue Committee.
