Grammy-award-winning choir The Crossing
6:00pm Doors open for a sneak preview of Tinworks Art 2021 7:00pm Performance begins 8:00pm Reception and bonfire In partnership with the Warren Miller Performing Arts Center in Big Sky, Tinworks Art will host the two-time Grammy-award-winning choir The Crossing, as part of the choir’s summer residency in Montana. The Crossing is a professional chamber choir conducted by Donald Nally and dedicated to new music. It is committed to working with creative teams to make and record new, substantial works that explore and expand ways of writing for, singing in, and listening to choir. This one-hour program will focus on new commissions that address the American condition. Gavin Bryars, “Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet” (1971/2021) We are delighted to host the world premiere by the renowned contemporary composer Gavin Bryars, who has created a vocal arrangement of his 1971 looped composition “Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet.” Bryars is one of Britain’s most influential living composers. His early work was notable for its use of indeterminacy, found audio, and minimal arrangements while his more recent catalogue fuses these motifs with the richness of choral and orchestral music. Ayanna Woods, “Shift” (2020) New to The Crossing, composer Ayanna Woods has written the words for “Shift” in which she contemplates the reimagining of our monuments. The work builds through layers to its climactic arrival, "bursting through the cracks in the story you tell, America." David Lang, “In Nature” (2020) Lang’s “In Nature” was commissioned by The Crossing and WMPAC and was specifically designed for performance during the pandemic when the performers had to sing at a distance from one another. This is a ticketed event; all proceeds offset the costs of bringing The Crossing to Montana. We recommend leaving the kids at home so you can enjoy the Crossing’s meditative and experimental approach to vocal performance.
