The BOAR

The BOAR (Blueprint Obstacle Adventure Race). An inaugural 5K & 1K race to support and spread awareness of youth experiencing homelessness in our community.  It is a family-friendly team-oriented event. It will be open to all ability levels, challenge team members to problem-solve and overcome obstacles together. It is encouraged to participate in teams of two or more.

5K - The 5K is an obstacle race designed to test your mental and physical strength and challenge team members to problem-solve and overcome obstacles together. It will start and finish at Glen Lake Rotary Park (formerly East Gallatin Recreation Area). There will be prizes. Competitive heats will be available.

  • Age Restriction: The minimum age to race is 10
  • Minors: Minor(s) between the ages 10-13; must be accompanied by an adult

1K - is a unique opportunity for individuals of all abilities to participate in an obstacle race.  People with developmental and mobility disabilities are welcome.  We want everyone in our community to experience The BOAR and we have designed obstacles to be equitable to most abilities. There will be a diversity of prizes.

  • Terrain of Course: Hard dirt with uneven ground often.
  • Strollers: The 1K course will be designed to include people using strollers. We do encourage you to ponder can your stroller handle the terrain of the course.
  • Crutches, Canes, or Wheelchair: We welcome these mobility supports and encourage a team to reinforce assistance when needed.

HRDC’s BOAR race committee is proud to include Montana State University Honors students among their community partners! During the planning process, the Committee needed help designing obstacles. MSU Professor Brian Brush answered the call, “I just couldn't resist the gravity of the opportunity. It seemed like a perfect fit for me to get involved given my position as

Community Design Center Director and my life as an athlete with a lot of history in the Bozeman sporting world. So I'm very happy I finally made the leap!”

The Committee has had the privilege of attending presentations for two cohorts of Honors Arts and Architecture students, most recently on April 28. In addition to conceptualizing equitable obstacles, building models, and estimating materials, students were asked to explain how their obstacles relate to youth experiencing homelessness. The BOAR Build Committee, with guidance from Structural Engineer, Ty Monks, have built two student-designed obstacles, including the “The BOAR Strong Wall” and “Boxes” with other builds planned every two weeks through mid-August.
