Writing Your Family Story: A Writer’s Workshop with Bill Dedman

Get started telling your family's story in a writer’s workshop with Bill Dedman. Mr. Dedman is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, an investigative reporter, and co-author of the bestseller Empty Mansions: The Mysterious Life of Huguette Clark and the Spending of a Great American Fortune.

Workshop participants will explore the process of researching and writing their family history. The workshop will cover motivation techniques, making the most of artifacts and photographs, and finding the right style and voice for your story. Mr. Dedman will use examples from his family's story and the epic Clark family story. He will provide tips for organizing material and share techniques to lessen the fear of writing.

Workshop participants are asked to bring a photo of a family member or a photo of an object that is important to your family story.

This free workshop is presented by MSU Alumni Foundation, Friends of MSU Library, and MSU Library. Space is limited to 20 participants. To register, contact Ann Vinciguerra, events and communications manager at MSU Library, ann.vinciguerra@montana.edu, 406-994-6857. Feel free to reach out if there are questions.
