FAT Ice Race

You’re attending more than a race — you’re stepping into a revived piece of European motorsport culture, reimagined for the American West.

ORIGINS
The Ice Race began in 1952 in Zell am See as a tribute to Ferdinand Porsche. Set against frozen Lake Zell, it blended competitive racing with spectacle — cars, motorcycles, aircraft, skijoring — all sharing one alpine stage.

Revived in 2019 by Ferdi Porsche, the great-grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, the event has evolved into a modern winter motorsport festival. After its North American debut in Aspen in 2024, it now lands at Moonlight Basin in Big Sky — a natural fit given the region’s global profile and alpine terrain.

ABOUT MOONLIGHT BASIN AND BIG SKY
Moonlight Basin is a private residential and resort community within Big Sky , Montana, operating under Lone Mountain Land Company. The community sits at the base of Lone Peak and is directly connected to Big Sky Resort, one of the largest ski areas in North America by acreage.

The FAT Ice Race track is constructed on Moonlight Basin’s golf course, which has been converted into a frozen motorsport track for the winter.

Big Sky is a community of approximately 4,000 year-round residents, located approximately one hour from Bozeman and Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport, which provides direct commercial air service to major U.S. cities. The community sits just north of Yellowstone National Park, placing it within a well-established tourism corridor.

Within the broader Big Sky community, Moonlight Basin is one of three private residential clubs, alongside Spanish Peaks Mountain Club and Yellowstone Club, all operated by Lone Mountain Land Company. These clubs are membership-based communities offering private amenities, residential neighborhoods, and direct mountain access. Big Sky Resort operates separately from the private clubs but provides shared ski terrain access to both Moonlight Basin and Spanish Peaks via interconnected lifts and runs. Town Center functions as the area’s commercial and civic hub, with restaurants, retail, offices, public events, and year-round programming serving both residents and visitors.

QUOTE FROM SAM BYRNE, CO-FOUNDER AND MANAGING PARTNER OF CROSSHARBOR CAPITAL PARTERS:
“Hosting a high-end Porsche race in a resort town highlights a sense of excitement, attracting affluent visitors, boosting local businesses, and elevating the town’s reputation as a unique destination. Events usually only seen in urban areas become even more special and memorable when brought to a small community like Big Sky .”
