What was the Harlem Renaissance and what are its lasting impacts on artwork? Modern artists like Augusta Savage, Jacob Lawrence, and Aaron Douglas documented and celebrated Black life, while also promoting arts education and community building. Art! with Dr. Ike, Ph.D. is back at Tinworks! The fourth season of this public lecture series will take place once a month over the summer and fall to accompany Chisel & Razor Acts I and II. The first episode will begin in the present, with each episode taking us backwards in time to Edmonia Lewis and her contemporaries. We’ll explore how art engages community, memory, Civil Rights, and Abolition by looking at Black artists in US art history. This event is free and open to the public; registration is not required. Attendees are encouraged to dress for changing weather conditions.
