Gallatin County Democrats win big in the 2024 General Election, ending the Montana Legislature’s Republican Supermajority

With Democrat Scott Rosenzweig’s win of House District 57 confirmed via recount, Gallatin County voters handily chose medical privacy, a livable future, and pragmatic voices to be reflected in Montana politics. Focusing on local races, Gallatin Democrats tirelessly canvassed neighborhoods, organized candidate meet and greets, and offered numerous public forums; these efforts ended the Legislature’s Republican Supermajority and will change Helena politics in January.  

On local victories, the Gallatin Democrats’ Chair, Damion Lynn, stated, “The work of my fellow volunteers and our legislators broke the Republican Supermajority. Our caucus grows to 14, after the nailbiting recount of House District 57. These wins took effort and a solid support system, which we have been building since 2016. This organization will continue growing our base, to provide the residents of Gallatin County with a government that improves our lives.”

To celebrate these victories and ring in the New Year and 69th Legislature, the Gallatin Democrats will gather at the Bozeman Senior Center (807 N Tracy Ave) on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 from 6-7:30 pm. We will host special guest Dorothy Bradley, former Montana legislator, local business leader, and former Montana State University faculty. This celebration is a community potluck–if you can, please bring a side dish, salad, or dessert to share.

We can also celebrate our confidence in elections administered by the Gallatin County Elections Department. Two local recounts, of Rosenzweig and EJ Porth as a Gallatin County Study Commissioner, confirmed the accuracy of local elections. Democrat Eric Semerad heads the Elections Department. 

Sadly, Montana voters were denied a fair election of Public Service Commissioners (PSC), who regulate public utilities throughout the State. Earlier this year, a Helena judge confirmed PSC districts were likely gerrymandered in favor of Republican candidates; therefore, violating voters’ constitutional right to suffrage and equal protection. We will continue to advocate for fair elections of all public servants.
