Thank you for picking up the September 2016 issue of Bozeman Magazine, our 112th issue! 9500 copies of this issue will be distributed to about 200 locations in the greater Bozeman area. We have included many articles in this issue highlighting the treasure that is Montana, and especially Bozeman. From 4H to Fenn’s Treasure, from Pokemon to the Bozeman Symphony to the Fountain of Youth, we have a little bit of everything for you on the pages within.

The official nickname for Montana is “The Treasure State” because of the lands rich mineral reserves. Montana’s many colored sapphires (the most valuable gemstone found in America) have been mined here since 1892. The mountains of Montana have also yielded fortunes in gold and silver since the first substantial deposits were discovered in the mid 1800’s. Gold was discovered in Montana in 1852, ten years later the precious metal was found in significant amounts at Grasshopper Creek resulting in the mining camp named Bannack, Montana’s first territorial capital. Montana’s state motto: Oro y Plata is Spanish for “gold and silver”.

Today, Bozeman’s Gold Rush is the annual Bobcat football home opener. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Gold Rush game, set for Saturday, Sept. 10, at 2:05 p.m. at Bobcat Stadium versus Bryant. Each season Bobcat fans fill the stadium in a sea of gold, wearing a custom t-shirt design demonstrating their Bobcat pride. Go Cats!
