December Cover Artist: Pamm Ciupa
Montana born artist Pamm Ciupa has lived in the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains her entire life, and this has given her the opportunity to explore them from the Alaska Highway to Southern Utah. As a student of nature, her paintings have always been rooted in the truth of its observation. Slowing down while observing a familiar landscape reveals a much deeper beauty than at first glance. Pamm’s paintings are a response to this longer encounter in the scene, reflecting the essence of the subject and the emotional connection she has with nature.
Primarily an oil painter, Pamm has grown in the medium by attending workshops and studying with renowned artists like Scott Christensen and Lori Putnam, among others. Ciupa has also competed in several Plein Air events across the country, from Florida to California, to right here in Montana. Previous training in the classical method, while attending an atelier, has enabled Pamm to combine figurative work into her landscapes.
Pamm continues to make Plein Air painting a regular practice, creating nature studies to bring back and develop into her larger studio works. Even when not painting, she is studying the great masters or techniques of contemporary artists through the extensive collection of art texts she has collected over the years.
Her work is in several private collections, has been featured in regional museum exhibitions, and garnered attention and awards at various Plein Air competitions.
This month’s cover painting, “Past Reflection,” is a Plein Air study created near the Ninepipes Museum in Northwestern Montana. You can find more of Pamm’s work on her website: pammciupa.com, and on Instagram @pammciupa
