How very eloquent is your reaction, full of arguments and sharp observations... I think this article has only become more urgent, even if it has a zest for hope which I almost think is too late. It is a struggle to stay positive, and that is what is expressed by Birdie, I think.
My grandfather was the County Assessor of Dawson Co. in the 50's, 60's and 70's. Back then it was his job to put up the markers. I wonder when it changed to the American Legion.

I just reread the article. It states that the Legion has been doing it for over 60 years. Interesting. Grandpa told me he installed them in Dawson Co. I wonder which is correct.
Is it possible your grandfather was a member of the American Legion? The program began with Legionnaires approaching state government leaders in November of 1952 and was formalized in 1953.
Kris, Thank you for your thoughtful, passionate invitation to examine our privilege, to name that our new normal is not normal, and to encourage readers to ‘bold kindness.’
The newspaper articles reporting the events surrounding Bozeman's death describe Mr Cover as "exhausted" and traveling by foot without arms or horses when he returned to the town, He was wounded and probably bleeding. A group of men retrieved Bozeman's body. Mr Cover's testimony was published in the newspapers. Mr Cover was one of the men that first discovered GOLD in the area. Mr Cover and McAdow started a flour mill. Mr Cover and Mr Bozeman were traveling on a business trip to find new customers past the Indian territories. The two men were advised not to travel through hostile territory but did anyway. Mr Cover did play a dominate role in the Virginia City vigalantes. He left Montana after Bozeman;s death and returned to Ohio, married his wife and moved to California to establish a town named Riverside. He did disappear in the desert while prospecting for the lost Peg Leg mine. It is thought the Helm's brothers killed him after he was separated from his prospecting partner on the trail. The Helm's sought revenge for the hanging of their brother in Virginia City by the vigalantes.

Let's just all cut the bs! The reason we live here is simply to avoid non white criminals. They will be here soon, and then we will pack up and run away from this place too! Where to next? I guess we could hit the woods of Idaho, that worked well for others in the past.
You missed so many great things like a domestic violence average that's 6x higher than the national average, the poor being chased out by the rich because of articles like this, a massive amount of accidents and DUIs, and to top it off living expenses that pass up even California in average housing and cost. It's so great realtors take the take to falsely advertise this place while you diminish journalistic integrity to make a buck.
4 things you need to know before moving to Bozeman:
1) Bozeman is no longer part of Montana.
2) The politics that have ruined their previous place of residence have been brought by the newcomers (those that have moved there in the last 20 years) are destroying personal freedoms.
3) Without a trust fund plan on living hand to mouth and eating shit from yuppies in Audis.
4) Regardless of you level of education you will be a servant to the 1% and likely never have the time or permission to enjoy what beauty is left.
not to mention wages are pathetically low; housing is totally unaffordable.. unless you want to live with 4 other persons in an apartment. it is a lawless state, with backwards city government. think twice.
When I moved to Bozeman from Boulder, Colorado in 1977 I wrote a rather prophetic to to the Bozeman Chronicle comparing the two towns and how, over time, Bozeman would become another Boulder. Voila!
